Summary: Rebecca, a spunky ten year old girl, is taken in by her two maiden aunts who have offered to pay for her education. She’s not exactly pretty but she has fascinating eyes. She’s clever and everyone likes her, but she’s too spunky for her aunt Miranda.

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed the story it has a very similar feel to Anne of Green Gables and Pollyanna. I went in not knowing what to expect because the only experience of the story I have is the Shirley Temple version, cute but not at all accurate.

The story begins when Rebecca is 10 and ends when she’s 17, part of me was disappointed at the lack of romance but then I reminded myself that it’s a children’s story and they don’t all have to end in a wedding :).
My Favorite Quotes:

“The soul grows into lovely habits as easily as into ugly ones, and the moment a life begins to blossom into beautiful words and deeds, that moment a new standard of conduct is established, and your eager neighbors look to you for a continuous manifestation of the good cheer, the sympathy, the ready wit, the comradeship, or the inspiration, you once showed yourself capable of. Bear figs for a season or two, and the world outside the orchard is very unwilling you should bear thistles.”
